It's the professional body that regulates the plumbing and pipe-mechanic trade in the province. Affiliation isn't a logo you slap on a van; it's a vetted membership with annual dues, ongoing training, exam-based certification of master plumbers, and a code of ethics enforced by the corporation itself.

Three things, plain English. One: insurance. If your home insurer asks who did the plumbing after a claim, "CMMTQ member" is a magic phrase that keeps payouts moving instead of stalling. Strictly legally, no — the law requires an active RBQ license, not CMMTQ affiliation. But the overwhelming majority of serious master plumbers join CMMTQ precisely because it imposes higher standards than the legal floor: annual audits, continuing education, third-party warranty plan. If a plumber tells you "I don't need CMMTQ", read it as "I'd rather not be audited."
What if my plumber isn't CMMTQ?
Not automatically a red flag — plenty of competent solo plumbers work without affiliation. But for big jobs (water heater swap, backwater valve, full bathroom reno, major emergency), CMMTQ gives you a third-party warranty plan and a formal complaint channel. For a faucet swap, less critical. For anything bigger, the math tilts hard toward affiliated.

Does CMMTQ membership make the price higher?
Slightly, on paper — dues, insurance, training, exam fees all cost real money, and that gets baked into the rate. In practice, the difference is usually a few percent on a job and it pays for itself the first time something goes sideways. A "deal" from an unaffiliated plumber can become a denied insurance claim worth tens of thousands.
